re.sil.ience (noun) : the capacity to recovery quickly from difficulties; toughness
This year has thrown each of us some real curve balls, which is why at the Why Not Awards Night, we wanted to celebrate resilience. But what does it really look like to be resilient? For our kids, it might be:
- Focusing on improving mental well-being while navigating chronic homelessness.
- Reducing dependence on substances during a season of unprecedented stress.
- Applying for jobs and attending interviews when you are pretty sure the odds are stacked against you ever being successful.
- Having the presence of mind to call 911 when a friend is suicidal.
- Continuing your education in spite of an unexpected pregnancy.
- Believing you can achieve what you set out to do by sheer force of will and trying again when you’ve gotten knocked down.
- Getting your G1!
- Making your own arrangements to go to a detox facility.
- Going back to school after three years out and getting four credits!
It’s this kind of tough resilience that we believe deserves to be recognized and celebrated. When we tell the youth we’ve seen them struggling and succeeding, it is empowering because it allows success to breed more success!
